Mini-THON is a yearlong fundraiser that runs through grades K-12 and is modeled after the Penn State IFC/Panhellenic Dance Marathon. Mini-THON was founded in 1972 by Charles and Irma Miller. Mini-THON at LCDS is currently led by seniors Kaylina B. and Grace L.
Kaylina said the club focuses on supporting children and families affected by pediatric cancer.
“Mini-THON is a student-led club dedicated to making a difference in the fight against childhood cancer,” Kaylina said. “Throughout the year, they organize fundraisers and events leading up to the annual Mini-THON, a school-wide event filled with music, games, and activities. Every dollar raised goes toward supporting children and families impacted by pediatric cancer, helping to fund research and provide critical care.”
Mini-THON’s main purpose is to help fight childhood cancer. According to Four Diamonds, Mini-THON is present in “more than 200 schools” and includes “tens of thousands of student volunteers.”
LCDS is one of the schools that participates in Mini-THON and hosted its annual fundraiser on April 17, 2026.
Kaylina said Mini-THON has made a positive impact both inside and outside the LCDS community.
“Within our community, Mini-THON has helped people feel more connected and aware of something bigger than themselves,” Kaylina said. “It gives students a chance to support a meaningful cause and see how their efforts can actually make a difference, while also encouraging them to continue participating in community service in the future.”
Kaylina also said the impact extends beyond the school because the money raised directly supports children and families affected by cancer.
“This year, we raised over $14,000 for this cause,” Kaylina said.
Sophomore Noor S., who serves on Mini-THON’s event planning committee, said she believes the program is important to LCDS.
“I think Mini-THON has a place at LCDS, but I wish it was more recognized,” Noor said. “Mini-THON does a lot for the school and for Four Diamonds.”
Noor also said activities such as glitter tattoos and cupcake decorating were highlights of this year’s event.
At LCDS, Mini-THON continues to play an important role in bringing the community together for a meaningful cause while supporting children and families affected by pediatric cancer.
