The LCDS girls’ field hockey team has been unstoppable thus far in their season. They boast an impressive 17-1 record and have big goals as the playoffs unfold. In 18 games, they’ve scored a whopping 109 goals and held their opponents to only 12.* They finished their regular season yesterday going undefeated across 17 games.
The general consensus on the team is that their chemistry on and off the field plays an essential role in their success.
“Our team chemistry is one of our biggest strengths on the field,” says Co-Captain Maddy G. ‘27. “Our most valuable asset is our ability to work together.”
Green feels that their tremendous success this season contributes to that chemistry just as much as the chemistry contributes to their success.
Goalie Yara E. ‘27 echoed Green’s thoughts on the team’s unity on the field.
“We feel like an actual team and not just a bunch of people playing together,” Yara says. “We have unity, people depend on each other and ask each other for advice and guidance.”
Maddy also talked about their bonds off the field, as well. The team often organizes team-building events to help bring them closer together, such as seasonal festivities, locker decorating, and gift-giving before matches. The team is known for their fun posts on their Instagram account, demonstrating firsthand how well they mesh together both on and off the field.
New Freshmen on the team shared similar experiences about unity. In being exposed to a new environment, Ellie B. ‘29 and Charlotte P. ‘29 both feel that they’ve been welcomed with open arms.
“I think this team is so welcoming,” Charlotte says. “I feel like we’re really accepted on the team and it’s a really supportive group.”
Charlotte also talked about how she’s “gained a lot of friends being on this team” and how “it’s made the transition [into high school] a lot easier.”
Ellie agreed, noting that the team feels like a family.
“Each position has their own little family,” Ellie says. “I think our team is just hardworking in general… Our team is extremely diverse.”
Maddy spoke to the relationship between the upper- and underclassmen on the team, explaining that, “The Seniors and Juniors really get to step up and be role models for the Freshmen and Sophomores”.
Their season has not been without challenges, however. With the ongoing construction of Lombardo Fields at LCDS, the team has been forced to travel to Manheim Township’s Weaver Fields for practice every day, located nearly 20 minutes away.
The team shares a positive outlook on the current conditions, however, explaining that their shortened practices have helped them to be more focused and efficient during practice in order to make best use of the time available.
“I think it’s awesome that we’re on turf every single day,” Coach Heim says. “Practicing on turf has helped us improve a lot more quickly.”
According to Coach Heim, her team is now on a level playing field (no pun intended) with the majority of the L-L league, which she believes will also lead to further success this season.
Coach Heim believes that the team’s most valuable asset is their versatility.
“We have many players who can play many different positions on the field,” Coach Heim says. “I think we’ve been strong the past three years, and every year, the more time we have playing together, the better we are becoming.”
“We have so many people who individually are really great players, and we also work together as a team really well,” Charlotte agrees.
Standout players on the team this year include Anna F. ‘26 with 50 goals and 17 assists, Zoey W. ‘28 with 12 goals and 8 assists, Lily F. ‘28 with 10 goals and 9 assists, Maddy G. ‘27 with 11 goals and 3 assists, and Yara E. ‘27 with 42 saves.* Anna F. currently has the most goals in the entire L-L League* and is committed to play D1 field hockey at the University of Pennsylvania next year. Maddy recently committed to D1 field hockey at Colgate University, starting in 2027.
Coach Heim and the team set a high bar for themselves this season and have more than accomplished it thus far. They are Section 4 champions and have made it to the district playoffs, which Green foresaw when interviewed on September 9. Their first loss of the season was handed to them in a hard-fought battle against Manheim Central in the L-L League Quarterfinals (3-2).
While at districts, the Cougars hope to make it past the second round into the semi-finals and earn a bye for states. This would be the team’s first appearance at states under Coach Heim’s leadership.
Heim feels that, “Every year, players step up.” She says that she has thoroughly enjoyed watching her team rise to the challenge and compete this fall.
